MY NEWEST ARTICLE https://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/never-automate-human-interactions-1172387580.html

Many things I say are contradictions. I like pulling from both directions because it brings strengths. I really do think that life and business are bridges, and if you pull hard in both directions, you'll find balance. For example, ego and humility. You need both, but you can't have to much of one. Same with clouds and dirt, aka, higher level and execution.

So when I say don't pay attention to small details, but I also say play to your strengths but your strength is attention to detail, I understand it can be hard to figure out what to do. But I have an idea. If your strength is attention to detail but you're looking for long term business success, there are some things you need to consider.

First, if you're top dog, your business is going to be small. But you would be an awesome number two three or four to a top dog. You need to pair yourself with someone who only thinks about the clouds and isn't down in the dirt like you are. You might even be happier not having the pressure of being number one because it will allow you to pay attention to those small details you would not normally be able to. Attach yourself to a number one and bet on your strengths.

If your strength is finite details, your upside is limited as the number one. You have two decisions to make. One, you're cool with that. Or two, you're going to latch on to someone who will be able to elevate your work and your eight or twenty percent will be greater than the a hundred percent you do for yourself.

REASONS TO NEVER AUTOMATE https://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/never-...
RANT ON AUTOMATION https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLxqG...

I think I need to clarify my POV on automation. So here I go.

I don't like automation when it's replacing something that could and should be done by a human. For example, I don't like the idea of an automatic direct message that sends when you follow somebody, or somebody follows you. It feels very spammy.

However, automation does some times make sense. We use it at Wine Library. When your order is confirmed, we send an email that says "Hey, your order is ready."

There is a fine line between what one would quantify as the thing that a human should do and the thing a computer should do. When automation tries to take the place of a human, that is when things get weird. When you use a computer to automatically populate names into mass emails that are SUPPOSED to look personal, that's messed up. When you sign an automation with your own name as if you did, that is also messed up.

To me, it all comes around to the intent of the automation. If you're trying to "trick" someone into thinking it's a person, that is where things get tricky.

One would argue that automating makes for a lot of conversion. But for me, I think there is more value in someone reaching out personally. I don't want a computer to be responding to you as me. When I have free moments, I try to answer every email I get. Personally.

So automation makes sense for a lot of things. But people are trying to use it to scale humans when there is a human element that matters. Ask yourself right now: does automation bug you when it tries to be human?

The answer is YES.

There is something that is rarely talked about in the business world and I want to start building more attention for it.

That thing is self-awareness.

I’m upset that the narrative these days is that everyone needs to be number one, own a company, be in charge. A lot of people are going to lose that way.

Self-awareness allows people to recognize what things they do best so they can then go hard on those aspects of their life. It also helps you accept your weaknesses.

What works for one person doesn’t work for everyone. I want people to learn to be at peace with themselves, to understand what they can offer, because everyone’s got something. The key, however, is learning how to find it.

Self-awareness can help you do that.

Self-awareness is being able to accept your weaknesses while focusing all of your attention on your strengths.

The moment you decide to accept your shortcomings and bet entirely on your strengths, things will change. Trust me.

I truly don't think that when I'm being selfish, it comes at the detriment of someone else.

So that's how I handle it.

That can be a hard thing to make yourself believe. Watching someone else have a hard time because of a decision you made is extremely upsetting to a lot of people. But I have a way to justify it.

When I'm in my most selfish place, I don't try to conceal the act in some way that hides what it is. I don't try to sugar coat or act like it's a good thing. Let them be upset because that is their right.

Even though  I am doing something that looks selfish to benefit me in the short term, it is actually going to positively affect the people it involves in the long term. I am making a decision in a five month window instead of a five year window, but history will allow that person to feel that it was palatable when they rekindle their thoughts around it. Even though it might sting or not feel as great in the short term, I know that looking back, it will be okay. Because I made the decision that was hard, but right.

When people start their pitches to me by saying "But first, please sign this NDA so our ideas don't get stolen", I immediately check out. Why? Because if you actually think in 2015 that your idea is so profound and nobody has ever thought of it, then you are lost in the reality of the marketplace. If that is your mindset, I don't see that as a winning mindset. Starting now, 2015 and beyond, the days of patenting ideas, IP being stolen, are gone. Every idea has been thought of. All of them. I mean it.

Now, people actually executing on those ideas? That is the big one now. You need to have the right resources, be in the right place in your career, have energy, skills, opportunities: those are the variables. Not the ideas.

There is nothing the DMV can do to improve their situation. Let me explain why. Because they are run by the state. So, it's political. They won't fix it. The only way to fix DMVs is the privatize them and let entrepreneurs run them. They, for a change, will actually care about the customer. Employees will care, because they would have incentives. Maybe they would even put Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts inside of the DMVs, to make more money on the rent.

Basically, privatized DMVs would innovate. Care. Give a crap. All the things that government industries don't do because it is not in their best interest. The people that can't innovate and can't win in a competitive landscape default to having terrible careless services.

I don't want to be a hardcore capitalist on this issue, though. But I really don't know. If you don't incentivize humans somehow to do the right thing, you can't win. AND...more and more, in a digital world, it's become easier to do that. There is no excuse any more. There are alternatives.
